Project: Redevelopment of a derelict landmark building, central Cambridge.

Material: GreenCoat PLX

Colour: Dark Silver / Anthracite Metallic. RAL 7037

Located directly opposite the main railway station, this landmark building was well known to residents and commuters in the central Cambridge area. It had fallen into disrepair and was used as a squat. Its condition deteriorated further when a fire destroyed a considerable amount of the internal timber and parts of the building shell.

The project was acquired by local company Hill Partnership for development circa 2016.

Zinc was considered for the roof area however, due to extensive refurbishment work and tight budgets, GreenCoat PLX was deemed a material that would offer a similar look and even better performance than zinc roofing sheets.

Following a very successful refurbishment with the roof installed by local company TR Freeman Limited, all 19 apartments were offered for sale and all sold within 4 hours of the marketing suite opening to one overseas investor.

Graven Hill is Europe’s largest self-build housing project. The scheme was recently part of Channel 4 TV programme Grand Designs, ‘The Street.’

When finished, the scheme will have 1,900 self-build homes located on a former MOD site. The first phase has already started, with plots having been released in 2016.

Strict planning conditions surround the types and choice of materials that can be used at Graven Hill, and GreenCoat PLX, as supplied by The Metal Roof Company, has been approved and used on a considerable number of plots built and under construction at Graven Hill.

This award-winning development stands on the site of a former Ice Cream factory in East London. The site was developed into 9 townhouses and 2 luxury apartments.

The scheme required a zinc roof alternative material for the metal roof and wall cladding in order to meet tight budgets, and offer a low-maintenance option to the new homeowners. Matching zinc colour downpipes and gutters were also chosen to maintain continuity with the metal roof and zinc style wall cladding.

GreenCoat PLX was an ideal metal solution. This Eco-friendly metal from Sweden not only ensured a great looking scheme, but also one that was shortlisted at the LABC Building Excellence Awards for the ‘Best High-Volume New Housing Development (8 + units).’

What is the best material for a metal roof or wall cladding?

This was the question posed when a project review took place on this West London housing scheme. Initially specified to use pigmented zinc, this scheme was in danger of running way over budget. Metal cladding for affordable housing was proving just the opposite, yet the specifiers wanted to retain the zinc cladding façade without sacrificing the design.

GreenCoat PLX in a Zinc finish grey proved the answer.

The scheme was completed on time and with relevant warranties in place to ensure that the developers met local obligations.

Is a zinc roof expensive? They can be, however, GreenCoat PLX is much better value for money. GreenCoat PLX is a roofing metal that has a long-life and has installation techniques similar to zinc roofing.

Three months later, the installation photographs show how good the roof looks. Zinc colour roof sheets are easy to install once you have an expert metal roof company, and the final images speak volumes.

When SHft Limited, a Surrey-based design and construction company, contacted The Metal Roof Company in 2019, they had a clear vision of a zinc Clad Dormer to the loft extension underway in Guildford.

Metal roof samples were dispatched and very quickly it became obvious that GreenCoat PLX in a zinc Silver finish was the ideal metal solution.

The project was completed using GreenCoat PLX metal roof sheets, a choice which perfectly complemented the stock colour bricks to the dormers cheeks. The specification for aluminium flashings, cappings and trims could now be changed to PLX, which helped reduce costs and lower the number of additional trades and materials required on site.
