Henning Stummel Architects Ltd is a London-based practice that meets design challenges with creative solutions. Prior to the development of Tin House, viewers of Channel 4 TV programme Grand Designs will have seen Henning’s earlier project, ‘The Workshop’, a challenging redevelopment of a former industrial plot in Camden, North London.

With Tin House, Henning faced similar challenges. A tight plot over-looked from all sides with difficult access. As with the RIBA award-winning project ‘The Workshop’, the site for Tin House was accessed by a narrow passage between two Victorian houses.

For the cladding of Tin House, Henning chose GreenCoat PLX in Brick red colour, along with a Dark Silver colour to give a zinc style contrast on a separate property, also part of the development. Material sustainability, ease of working and the long material warranty of the metal made the decision easier.

By choosing GreenCoat PLX with narrow seam centres of 500mm a tight, a much crisper look to the façade was achieved. Usually, for standing seam cladding using zinc, copper or colour coated steel, many expert metal roof installers will use an angled seam on facades, giving the metal a flatter appearance. With angled seams, 500mm or 430mm seam centres are commonly used for wall cladding.

Further notable details on Tin house were the use of Scandinavian-style integrated gutters on the ‘roof pods’ to deal with rainwater run-off. Integral roof windows on the top of each pod kept the look clean and minimal.

Tin House featured on Channel 4 TV programme Grand Designs.

It achieved Winner RIBA London Award 2016 and Nominated RIBA National Award 2016

Tin House was a finalist at the 2016 World Architecture Festival (WAF).

Project: The Eggshed, Scotland

This project in Scotland was transformed from a transit store into a beautiful looking heritage centre in the heart of the Scottish country. The property sits on the 14km long Crinan Canal and it’s iconic name ‘The Eggshed’ was named after the building’s previous use for transit storage of eggs in the early 19^th Century.

This building is a hub for learning about the rich heritage of the area, whilst simultaneously providing facilities for visitors and local residents.

This project in Scotland uses our GreenCoat PLX standing seam metal roofing material, a zinc roofing style product. It’s an eco-friendly roofing material, offering many more benefits to the homeowner and architects than zinc, for a fraction of the cost.
